Who Does Art?

The best time to encourage an artist is any time.
The first step might be to put some materials out and invite them to experiment.

Yesterday I was working with some 3-and 4-year old kids with 'special needs.'
I sat at a low table and started sketching out three loose figures with a fat brown crayon.

As children approached to see what I was doing, I asked if they'd like to draw.
None were able to answer verbally, but each one nodded as they sat down.

With a color of their choice, each began to apply lines, mostly in roughly circular orbits, or zigzags,
or, in one case, with impressive control and recognizable results.

Ariel had represented a row of four faces with a purple crayon.
There were lashes on all eight eyes, three smiles and a frown.
Hm-m-m-m....

I have many stories of my time with children in classrooms, learning about the Arts and Literature,
Science and Math, as well as History and Sports....but mostly learning about Human Nature.

I call the collected stories "Teacher Tells All: Notes from a Worn Out Whistle Blower."
